Literacy Volunteers on the Green Offers Tutor Training Sessions March 24-26 in New Milford

NEW MILFORD – (March 9, 2009) – Literacy Volunteers on the Green, the volunteer organization that teaches English to newcomers to southern Litchfield and northern Fairfield counties, is offering training to people who want to become tutors March 24, 25 and 26 at the St. John’s Church Parish Hall in New Milford.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life by giving them the gift of the English language,” said Anne Maitland, co-founder and Executive Director of Literacy Volunteers on the Green. “We will teach you how to teach another person to speak, read and write English. All you have to do is be willing to spend an hour and a half a week to help another person improve his or her life.”

Ms. Maitland says no prior teaching experience or knowledge of a foreign language is required to become a tutor, “just a willingness and desire to help others improve their English skills. Once you are trained, we will match you with students, secure a location for your class, equip you with all teaching materials and provide you with support as needed and follow-up workshops.”

St. John’s Episcopal Church is located at 7 Whittlesey Avenue . A donation of $25 to the program to help defray the costs of tutor training is suggested, but not mandatory. Call LVG at 860-355-0830 or visit www.lvg-ct.org for further information. Literacy Volunteers on the Green is a 501c(3) organization that is affiliated with the United Way of Western Connecticut and ProLiteracy America .
