Become a tutor

Neither prior teaching experience nor knowledge of a foreign language is required. Patience, respect for cultural differences and a desire to help speakers of other languages learn English are the key skills needed. Tutors find their experiences extremely rewarding, and say that they learn as much as they teach, if not more.

Being a Literacy Volunteer on the Green Volunteer has truly been a very meaningful experience for me. Teaching immigrants to read, speak, and write in English so that they can live their American Dream is a unique opportunity to help others in a deep, important, and very personal way.

I am very happy that the program is now in JPS. It has absolutely made a huge difference with teacher-parent communication and with the progress of the children. Our parents are more confident now that they are better able to speak English.

There are two tutor training sessions annually. Once tutors are trained, they are matched with students, provided with tutoring venues and equipped with all necessary teaching aids and student materials. Tutors receive supervision and are given continued training throughout the year by the organization.

We ask all tutors to commit to one year of service, targeting a total of 40 ninety-minute classes.

If you are interested in becoming a tutor, we also ask that you fill out the following application and read our Tutor Commitment. Once you have done this, please return only the application to us.
