About Us
Literacy Volunteers on the Green is dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals through English language instruction, basic reading skills and an introduction to the fullness of American life. This is accomplished under the direction of tutors who are trained and supported by the organization. All instructional services are provided free of charge.
Literacy Volunteers on the Green offers flexible class schedules and individualized instruction based on our students’ availability and needs. All of our students have different levels of English language skills as well as varied literacy in their own languages. We meet our students’ needs through small group instruction and one-on-one tutoring, if necessary.
While we target the towns of Bridgewater, Kent, New Milford, Roxbury, Sherman, Warren and Washington, a number of our tutors and students come from other area communities.
In addition to basic literacy and ESL, LVG offers a family literacy program, Family Read®. This program, which has been offered in English and Spanish, provides encouragement, support and instruction to families and caregivers.
New initiatives include peer-tutoring classes for young adults and conversation classes.
Literacy Volunteers on the Green is a program of the United Way of Western Connecticut and a ProLiteracy America Volunteer Program Affiliate. LVG is also a member of the Connecticut Literacy Alliance.
